The 4th Ghana Water Forum (GWF), has finally been fixed for November 5 to November 7, 2013 with the theme; “Monitoring and Evaluation: Key to sustaining and Up-scaling WASH Services”.
At the
9th in a series of meetings held by a committee put together by the
Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing (MWRWH) on Wednesday, September
11, members agreed on the new date and venue – the La Palm Beach Hotel in
Accra.

The 4th Ghana Water Forum (GWF), has finally been fixed for November 5 to November 7, 2013 with the theme; “Monitoring and Evaluation: Key to sustaining and Up-scaling WASH Services”.
Originally
scheduled to take place in 2012 after the first, second and third editions in
2009, 2010 and 2011 respectively, the organising committee postponed the fourth
to this year, citing some challenges it had experienced in putting the fourth
edition together.
Sub-themes
chosen for the seven sessions of the three-day forum are; “Sector Performance –
Existing Framework”; “Water and Sanitation Sector Performance in 2012/2013” for
the first day and, “Key Sector Issues”; “Key Actions and Targets for 2014” and
“Sector M & E Framework – Concrete Steps” for the second day.
The
third and final day of the forum will witness presentation of a draft
communique and side events as parallel sessions comprising a Ministers and
Heads of Development Partners meeting that will review and adopt the draft
communique, as well as a Children and Youth Forum.
According
to the committee chaired by Mr Frederick Addae, Director, Water Directorate,
Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, the forum will end with a
closing ceremony, at which there would be reading of communiques from both the
main forum and the children’s forum.
Stakeholders who have taken part in the forum
over the years include the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Coalition of
NGOs in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS), Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL),
Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), Water Resources Commission (WRC),
World Vision Ghana and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) among a host
of others.
FACTS
The GWF was established:
- To create a platform for Ghana’s political leadership, water sector professionals, stakeholders and partners to discuss opportunities and challenges of achieving water security for Ghana’s socio-economic development;
- To take stock of the status of the achievements of the MDGs in Ghana, reviewing key achievements and challenges and propose strategies and actions for accelerating the achievement of the water and sanitation targets;
- To build consensus on water security and provide recommendations for consideration at the highest political level;
- To formulate concrete policies, strategies and actions to accelerate water resources development and the provision of services;
- To provide a platform for exchange of Water and Sanitation Sector knowledge and information; and
- To serve as a forerunner to the Africa Water Week, where proceedings from the GWF would be presented.
